About Our Freshwater PearlsChina has been producing pearls for centuries but it is only in the
last couple of decades that the Chinese cultured pearl industry has
come to dominate the world market. China is a world leader in the
production of freshwater pearls and saltwater pearls. It is the
freshwater pearls that we specialise in buying because they offer
consumers the best value for money.
Unlike their saltwater counterparts (which might be 10% nacre and 90 %
nucleus) freshwater pearls are virtually all nacre. Top quality
freshwater pearls offer outstanding lustre, durability and value.
Freshwater pearls are cultured with tissue grafting. Small tissue
slices from another mollusc are inserted into the oyster to yield
pearls. The mollusc forms nacre around this alien tissue to
protect itself, and so a pearl is formed...
Because of the absence of a bead nucleus, round freshwater pearls are
rare. The size of the pearl reflects how long it has been
cultured. The quality of freshwater pearls from China has been
steadily improving and now there is a huge range of qualities and
prices available. Freshwater pearls occur in colours of natural
peach, lavender, pink and white. Top quality dyed freshwater
pearls in shades of black, grey, green and gold are also available.
Disclaimer:
So Pretty Pearls will always endeavour to supply pearls as close as
possible to the colours shown here on this website. Please be
aware that Freshwater Pearls are a natural product, and variations will
always occur. If a matching set of items are purchased, Andrea
will always give priority to matching the Freshwater Pearl colour
within that set. If you are truly not happy with your pearls when
you receive them, we can arrange an exchange excluding postal
charges.
